THE “WAR ON DRUGS”: AN AMERICAN POLICY

Can we say we are winning the “war on drugs” when we now have more people using drugs than when the war began 35 years ago? What is this war really about? Many suggest it’s a war on people. What do you think? Join us in watching scenes from the drug war that has led to the mass incarceration of people of color around this country and its devastating impact on families and communities. Let’s have an open discussion.

PUBLIC HEARING ON PRISON ISSUES

TUESDAY, AUGUST 29, 2006

5:30 – 8:30 PM

CITY HALL, NEW HAVEN

(Across from the New Haven Green, 165 Church Street, 2nd flr)

Come to listen, to support, or to testify for you or a loved one.

There is very little public oversight of what goes on behind prison walls. We want to inform Conn. legislators and demand that they examine the system that is costing taxpayers over a half billion dollars a year. We insist that prisoners be treated humanely, are safe from physical harm, receive adequate and timely health care, are afforded the opportunity for rehabilitation and education and a successful transition plan upon release. We want legislators to examine the psychological effects of 23 hour lockdowns, punitive segregation and being housed in the supermax. We are concerned about youth in prison, especially those in adult prisons, and about mental health and addiction issues not being adequately addressed. Due to community concerns People Against Injustice is hosting a public hearing to bring attention to a forgotten population.

PLEASE COME EARLY TO SIGN UP IF YOU PLAN TO TESTIFY!!!

For more info call Barbara Fair (203) 937-1060 after July 27, 2006
