ED LEINSTER, CONSULTING IN CRIMINAL LAW
I practiced criminal law for 25 years in Orlando Florida were I was very successful and very well known as a tough advocate for my clients. I tried cases from Federal bank robbery and drug importation to first degree murder.
And went to prison for a DUI accident (four years, three months) I work with a lot of inmate's issues. I’m one of a very small club of criminal attorneys who’ve seen the other side of the razor wire.
Through no one's fault but mine, I went on a lengthy bender and wound up running into a lady one morning. I went to prison for four years and three months as the result. I lost a lot in the process. I can't deny that only prison would have stopped my drinking at that point but whatever there was to learn from the experience was learned within a year, year and a half. Everything after that was just piling on. My prison experience was dreadful. The people running that show delight in making the lives of inmates even more stressful than it is anyway. Prisons are run by low brow yahoos who combine a level of meanness and stupidity difficult to find outside of a junk yard.
Don't expect that the prisons of this country will change much in the foreseeable future. There were many programs and early release dates in the years past which made some sense and didn't crush people. Today, the prison industry is the second largest money maker in Florida. The food is hired out to a private firm which, like most, values the bottom line. This is accomplished by the subtraction of such things as taste and nutrition. Ten percent of their doctors are allowed not to be licensed in Florida. The question is, whether they are licensed anywhere. Many speak poor English if they speak it all. It's a horror show. People on the outside, even well meaning, find it hard to believe the stories carried by inmates. The things done to inmates aren't just cruel, they're incredibly petty. Lest I go on too long, it's a sad situation but it's suicide for politicians to take a stand on it.
I spend most of my work time now working as a consultant with criminal attorneys, much of it post conviction. I work off of an all states, all feds data base. Fortunately, in all of this, my reputation as a criminal attorney remained intact. My references are four star. For now, I do criminal law consulting and ski.
Today, my life is a lot different. I live in the Rockies in Colorado with my wife and daughter. While waiting to get my law license back, I consult with numerous criminal lawyers who hire me for any number of reasons. And I work with inmates on appeals, post conviction, prison transfers, whatever. I work from an all states, all federal, database on Westlaw. I can handle any State, I’m completely current on every phase of criminal law and I know the system from both sides. References will be supplied upon request. I’m real good at this and if I can help, even if it’s only to answer a question, I’m always available. Feel free to e-mail me.
