FOOD SERVICES FOR INMATES

One of the companies that provides food for the prisons is Food Distributors of Ct. They deliver at night. The other is Government issued, cheese instant potatoes, oatmeal, flour, peanut butter, butter, instant eggs, chopped beef in a can, sliced pork in a can, chopped pork in a can, instant milk, tea bags, and a few others that the boys can't remember. I know of the food distributors per a correctional officer that won't let me give his name

Yeah, now that I read that last post, I remember seeing Government issue cheese, flour and various other foods.  Sometimes the unrefrigerated foods would sit in the hallway in the building where DataCon was housed until someone came along to store it wherever it was that it belonged.  A personal favorite were the dried cranberries that would be in bags inside boxes in the hallway.  The prisoners never got these, I don't know who would.  But once in a while there'd be a bunch of boxes of this stacked in the hallway.  (It's anybody's guess how some of those cranberries disappeared, too.  I don't know nothin' bout that! LOL)

All food is brought to different facilities per Niantic York Prison. At the Women's facility the food is prepared and shipped out to all the facilities. Its bagged up and shipped to theses facilities, Carl Robertson, Corrigan and Cybulski, Willard and Cybulski

Where do they go to buy the food that the women inmates are preparing? I don't understand why it's done this way. All the facilities have kitchens and I'm sure that some of these men cooked for a living. Sounds to me like they don't even use the kitchen in the other facilities. Why should these women have to do all the cooking? If the cooking was being done in each facility the inmates would get a hot meals.

This Unit provides more than 20,000,000 meals per year to meet the varied nutritional needs of the incarcerated population within Connecticut's 18 correctional facilities. Through innovative initiatives and the aggressive search for economic food purchases, this unit produces three meals a day for each inmate at a total cost of just over $2.00.

The Unit utilizes a modern Cook/Chill production method, which from one main production kitchen at the York Correctional Institution, annually produces 5,000,000 pounds of wholesome and nutritious meals for all 19,000 offenders including special therapeutic and religious menus.

The Unit has been recognized by the Connecticut Department of Agriculture for supporting local farmers by purchasing and utilizing more than 5,000 pounds of locally grown produce, at less cost and higher nutritional value than commercially prepared fruits and vegetables.

The food service staff at several correctional facilities offer culinary arts training programs to the offender population. These have proven highly successful in preparing offenders for gainful employment upon completion of their incarceration. Two inmate staffed Cafes, in Wethersfield and Cheshire, provide a realistic work environment for offenders preparing for the food service industry.

The Nutrition and Food Services Unit future projects include enhancing staff training, gaining compliance with American Correctional Association accreditation, and producing a new master menu with updated recipes.

We take on a burden when we put a man behind a wall.  That burden is to give him a chance to change...to deny him...is to plant the seeds of future anguish."
